I am blessed with so many creative geniuses for friends. Enjoy my bragging.

Ready for Baby Boy

Moving back to the South from California has been a major adjustment. We left many a close and true friends back in LA – it’s probably the hardest adjustment I’ve had to slowly accept. But the good thing about moving back to the South is that we moved BACK to the South. That means, we’re back where we have old ties. And to my surprise and much thankfulness, I have had many of those old ties pop up and flourish here in Nashville.

One of those is Claire.

Claire and I met blksjhk years ago as Freshmen in college at Furman University (no, that’s not a typo, I’m just not admitting the number of years it’s been because I would have to admit that I’m actually getting old and I refuse to damper my gorgeous fall weather buzz). We lived next door to one another on our Freshman hall … well, my first Freshman hall, but that’s a WHOLE other story for a totally different blog. Claire is from the Mississippi gulf, I grew up down the road in Pensacola, FL, so I liked her immediately. We didn’t become besties during our one semester as neighbors, but I always admired her (ok, and I was totally intimidated by her…but come to find out a few weeks ago she was intimidated by me, which I find hilarious. If we had both just known then!) After my awesome roommate and I moved to a second Freshman hall after first semester (ok, let’s just leave say our third roommate wasn’t so… compatible…even after group therapy, no, I’m no kidding), Claire and I remained friendly, but we lost touch after graduation. So, cut to the chase, when I was settled in Nashville, I began reaching out to fellow Furmanites on good ol’ Facebook. And there she was – Claire. We had coffee one day, started some sewing projects after that, swapped bargain shopping secrets, and the rest is history. She’s married to a fabulous gentleman, has a precious 2-year-old daughter and is having a little boy TOMORROW!  Eeee! BABY!

Well, naturally, I had to make sure baby boy would look great coming home. So, I took a sleep onesie that Claire got at a consignment sale for practically nothing (she is seriously the QUEEN of bargain shopping and Craigslist. Honestly, she should give workshops) and monogrammed his initials. After all, he will be a Southern gentleman.

And in the process, I, of course, went to the consignment sale shopping for my new niece and found another sleep onesie for baby and monogrammed that one too.

Baby boy can never have too many sleepers.

Covered Bumpkins

I have been paring up with Femi at Coralily Photography in the past months. We are having a grand ol’ time exploring new fabrics, ideas and designs for her photoshoots.  When she booked a set of newborn twins (a boy and girl), we knew we needed soft & yummy, but really quick and easy. Moving one newborn with waking him is one thing, but two – all bets are off.  After searching around for ideas, diaper covers were the winner.

I did two test runs with simple, natural muslin.

Then made the two “real” covers in matching cotton fabric: one in blue and one in pink. All turned out beautifully.

Guess which ones Femi loved the most? Yup, the test muslin ones. Figures.

Christmas is in the Bag

Every year at Christmas I bake tons of Walsh Cheese Wafers for our friends. Each year I look for a new cute way to wrap them. Last year, I use personalized tags from Perideau Designs. This year we stepped it up to their personalized muslin bags and they were a HIT!

I loved how I could choose a variety of colors and designs to satisfy the different holidays (Hanukkah and Christmas). I love the fact there are no tags to fall of or get lost and our friends can re-use them; perhaps to store extra light bulbs, batteries or ornament hooks for the holidays next year.

And get excited, Bridgett has designs for these bags for Valentine’s Day – perfect to send to school with the kids or to the office filled with treats…or just to fill for yourself. Yum.

Check out her blog for details – http://perideaudesigns.com/blog/2011/01/03/valentines-day-treat-bags/

There ARE Angels in Los Angeles!

About 8 months ago, Jeff from Project Angel Food’s Divine Design approached Li’l Bumpkin about donating items to their annual charity shopping event that benefits AIDS research. I got about five words into the email and he had me; I was in. I’ll do anything to make people’s lives a little happier and more hopeful.

I buddied up with PIVOT Furniture to create a Lush Baby Giveaway : a Li’l Bumpkin Bankie and Giraffe and a PIVOT 1 Hour Design Consultation, Walnut Playing Blocks and a Walnut Shadow Box.

The Shopping night was unreal; Divine Design managed to completely fill an entire Robinsons-May department building with donated items from lip gloss to entire bedroom sets. I couldn’t get over how much generosity was piled in on place at one time. I was so touched and honored to be a tiny part of it.

It was so exciting to see our donation displayed and hear people oogle over it!

Hopefully next year, Li’l Bumpkin will be able to donate a slew of bankies, quilts, burp cloths, bibs and more. I would love to be able to afford to ship a truck load of goodies. Oooo, perhaps I’ll get a ton of Etsy shops to do that same – imagine, a whole Etsy.com section! Love. Any of you sellers, let me know if you’re interested. I’ll get your info to Jeff.

The GORGEOUS walnut blocks are from Little Saplings Toys. Their products are phenomenal and they are a joy to work with. Check them out: http://www.littlesaplingtoys.com/ or http://www.etsy.com/shop/littlesaplingtoys

The Hideous Kitchen Counter is Now Consealed

It’s that time again – Sewing time with Laura S!

So, the main thing that drives Laura S. the most crazy in her house is the most glorious funky shaped kitchen counter. I was actually kinda font of it. But I live to make my people happy, so I shall sew whatever my dear Laura S. wants.

We spent many hours shopping for the perfect fabric – something pretty, but not too much of a print to where it over powers the room. Finally, we stumbled upon a simple beige canvas at Michael Levine’s Discount Loft Store. The best fabric ever: perfect weight, easy to sew, and a dream to iron. I wish I had more for every other project, I love it.  Once we put up the curtain and I saw the difference, I now agree with Laura S. It was quite hideous.

Once we finished that project, I was in the restroom and asked Laura S. if she had thought of curtains for that window. Why, yes, of course she had, what was I thinking. Long story short, we dug through all her fabric scraps and pieced together curtains. Light and airy to light still comes through (it’s a tiny bathroom), but a little privacy on the bottom.  Easy breezy and done.

It’s amazing what you can accomplish so quickly when you : 1. Are laughing and cracking up with a close friend and 2. Put all fear and perfectionism aside and just DO and CREATE.

Satisfaction achieved.

Treats for my Peeps

Ok, I admit it. I have a hard time accepting help and gifts without wanting to give something in return. I love giving treats. So, when my cousin, Lisa, saved me from death’s door with her cough syrup and an Etsy friend, Jennifer, helped me with marketing fonts – free of charge – you know treats were needed!

Oh, what to make? Nothing too big, but extra special to let the ladies know how much I appreciate them and their generosity. After much debate, I settled on pot holders/trivets and coasters. The next dilemma, what colors?

Well, Lisa was easy – Ole Miss colors, UGH. Now, understand, I’m a hard core LSU fan, most of our family are the same (being from Louisiana, it makes sense). But Lisa has always been the black sheep when it came to football (49ers instead of the Saints? Good Lord.) Nevertheless, I managed to suck it up and cut and piece the fabric together… Of course, playing the LSU fight song and drinking an Abita beer during the process did dull the agony a bit.

Now, for Jennifer, it was a little harder. We know each other through Etsy. She designed and printed all my labels that adorn my creations – gorgeous, right? I know, she’s awesome. But Jen and I never really chatted beyond our professional messages back and forth. So, instead of guessing I just asked – What’s your favorite room in your home? What are your favorite colors? What’s the color scheme in that room? She answered as if she were my long-lost twin, “I LOVE blues and greens together…and some brown added too. My furniture is like a light olive green. Some may call it baby food/puke green. My walls are aqua-ish. 🙂 Dark brown furniture. I love natural browns, beiges, blues, greens…Does this help?” Um, YES, Jennifer, it does…and by the way, we are the same person.

It was super fun going through my scraps and making art from nothing. And both gals were super excited to get their treats. I’m just happy that I could give something in return and tell them how much I treasure them. Love you gals!

Lisa’s Response: Just got home to find my treats in the mail! I love love love them- and the Ole Miss colors are awesome ( I know that was hard for you so that makes it even more special!) I am already using them! Love you!  P.S. Great LSU game today!! So happy they beat Bama.. you know that I am a closet LSU fan ( except the weekend before Thanksgiving!)

Jen’s response: Got the treats!!! I got them on Saturday. I LOVE them! 🙂 The fabric is DEFINITELY what I would have chosen…and the labels are just awesome on them! I can’t believe I made those labels…they seem so much better than usual. LOL. THANK YOU so much!!!!!!!

Tea Towels for Kendall’s 3rd Birthday

My “niece,” Kendall, turned 3 this weekend. She had a huge, blow out birthday party in the theme of Pink & Green Candy. Because I knew she’d be drowning in presents, I sent a Savings Bond as her official gift (which translates to her as “MONEY!”). She’ll thank me when she goes to college. But I also made some tea towels for her mommy, Bridgett, to use or not use.

When in Ashland, OR, I found these pink and green plaid towels. I immediately thought of Kendall’s party and bought them.

Of course I couldn’t just leave them plain! I added pink and green rick-rack and coordinating “K”s.

I think they are adorable. Bridgett got an unexpected bonus treat and I created an unexpected new product – custom tea/hand towels. It’s a win-win. She put them on the cotton candy table – perfect! Check it out on her blog : http://perideaudesigns.com/blog/2010/10/03/kendalls-sweet-shoppe-birthday-party/
